Bowling Conditions - The Basic Christmas Tree Pattern - When the bowling lanes are conditioned in strips or stages like a step ladder it is called the Christmas tree oil pattern. As you look down the lane the oil pattern resembles a Christmas tree. There are many different types of Christmas tree lane oil patterns. This is one of the basic ones. The idea behind a Christmas tree pattern is to give the bowler more options of lines to play.

Almost all bowling leagues use a pattern called a “House Shot”. Most of the time this will look like a Christmas tree or a Top Hat if we could actually see the oil. These patterns will have a higher volume of oil in the middle and very little oil the closer you get to the gutters. The high point of the short oil pattern will normally begin from the fifth board and rise to the eighth board. Inside the eighth board, the pattern is completely flat. Since the oil pattern is on the relatively short side (this used to be the normal pattern length before aggressive bowling balls) there is a lot of lane left which other than topography has no definable shape or guidance. The house pattern is the standard oil pattern you’ll find in any bowling center. While it might vary slightly from house to house, the general idea is the same: more oil in the middle and less on the outside (between the 10 board and gutter ). Most of your house shots will look either like a Christmas Tree or the Lincoln Top Hat. Now if you were to lay these 2 designs on the lane, you will have more oil in the middle of the lane and slowly have less as you “branch” to the outside of the lane. Oil that is pushed or carried down the lane by balls when there is bowling on the lane. CHERRY Chopping off the front pin by driving it straight back past any other standing pins to the right or left. CHRISTMAS TREE A conditoning (oil) pattern. The oil is tapered from right to left and long ways down the lane, tapering into a point.
